Dee Snider, Gary Glitter, The Beach Boys, Leif Garrett, Bruce Springsteen, Delbert McClinton, and Dave Edmunds but to name a few of the artists who had a hit with the song ‘I love to go a wandering’ by Friedrich Wilhelm Moller.
And wandering is what the folk at Blandford Methodist Church Lunch Club enjoy doing. So, on Tuesday 28th October, 22 excited people boarded a coach and headed for the Silk Mill in Whitchurch Hampshire.
Greeted by Colin and Debroah, our two guides for the day, we enjoyed amazing hospitality. Beginning with morning coffee in the café and then on our tour of the Silk Mill itself and finally we ate lunch. Everyone was friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble.
The history of the Silk Mill was fascinating, being situated on Frog Island was rather novel and watching the mallards on the River Test made for an interesting day out. Who knew that so much work went into producing a piece of silk material which on reflection explained the rather high price, especially if one wished to purchase a silk scarf in the queen’s racing colours.
Weary but content, we headed home – much wiser than we had been when we arrived about the production of silk items. Also being suitably full from a delicious lunch, the odd snore or two could be heard on the return journey. I wonder where we might wander off to next. Watch this space.
